Dinan and Rothéneuf, February 2022

Two glorious days of sun at the end of February 2022 gave us the promise of Spring. The temptation to head out in the van was strong even though it was likely to be a bit cold, but we are now hardened cold weather campervanners so we packed the heater and the big duvet and headed off to Dinan, about 90 minutes away. Dinan is a ramparted town on the river Rance, between Dinard and St. Malo, and is not for those with weak ankles. Cobbled streets, some at an almost 45 degree angle, lead down to the pleasure port on the river, from where you can look up and see the most impressive castle ramparts. We also came across the best/worst shop title pun, where we sampled some utterly delicious Breton cakes – kouign amann, and ker-y-pom.

Dinan is also home to a small but beautiful railway station which was built in 1931 in the Egyptian/moderne style.

The next day we headed to the aire at Rothéneuf, just to the east of St. Malo. It’s a popular coastal spot, and rightly so. So many beautiful and rugged beaches and coves are within walking distance.
